How to Choose the Best Towels for Your Hotel or Retail Business – A Buyer’s Guide
A practical buying guide for hotels and retailers — GSM, yarn types, certifications and supplier checklist.
Buying towels for a hotel or retail business isn't the same as buying them for home. The wrong specification costs you money — through faster wear, higher laundry bills, or disappointed guests who notice the difference. The right specification locks in quality, consistency and margin for years.
This hotel towel buying guide covers every decision you'll face: GSM, yarn type, construction, certification, sizing, and how to evaluate a supplier before placing a bulk order. Whether you're sourcing for a single property or building a hospitality supply programme, this is the framework to use.
Step 1 — Decide on GSM First
GSM (grams per square metre) is the single most important number on a towel spec sheet. It determines weight, absorbency, laundry cost and perceived quality. For hotels and retail, the decision usually comes down to which tier you're serving.
| Hotel / Retail Tier | Recommended GSM | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Budget / 2-star hotel | 380–450 GSM | Low laundry cost, fast drying, acceptable durability |
| 3-star hotel / mid-retail | 450–500 GSM | Good balance of softness, absorbency and cost |
| 4-star hotel / premium retail | 500–600 GSM | Noticeably luxurious feel, holds up to institutional laundering |
| 5-star hotel / luxury retail | 600–650 GSM | Maximum plushness, premium guest experience |
| Spa / wellness | 600–700 GSM | Weight-in-hand signals quality; wrap comfort is key |

Step 2 — Choose the Right Yarn Construction
GSM tells you how much yarn is in the towel. Yarn type tells you what that yarn actually feels like and how long it lasts.
Combed Cotton — The Hotel Standard
Combed cotton towels are the industry benchmark for hospitality. The combing process removes short fibres, leaving a smoother, stronger yarn that resists pilling and holds up to repeated high-temperature washing. If you're building a hotel supply programme and need one yarn type, combed cotton is it. Our hotel towel range is 100% combed cotton, 400–600 GSM, built to institutional laundry standards.
Zero Twist — Maximum Softness
Zero twist towels use untwisted yarn loops, which creates 20–30% higher absorbency than conventional ring-spun at the same GSM. They feel exceptionally soft — ideal for luxury retail, spa environments and five-star properties where the first-touch experience is part of the brand. Note: zero-twist towels require a first wash to dissolve the PVA binder that holds the loops in place during production.
Bamboo & Tencel — Sustainability-Focused
For hotels with sustainability commitments or retail brands targeting eco-conscious buyers, bamboo and Tencel-blend towels offer naturally antibacterial properties, superior colour vibrancy, and a closed-loop production story. Increasingly required by EU buyers meeting ESG reporting targets.
Step 3 — Check the Certifications
Certifications matter for two reasons: compliance and trust. Many hotel chains and retail buyers now require certified suppliers, and consumers increasingly look for certification marks on packaging.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — tests for harmful substances including pesticides, formaldehyde and heavy metals. Class I is the highest standard, required for baby products. If you're buying OEKO-TEX certified towels, confirm the certificate number and expiry date directly on the oeko-tex.com database — don't just take the supplier's word for it.
- BSCI — audits labour rights and workplace safety at the factory. Required by many European retail chains and hotel groups. A B rating or higher is considered acceptable.
- ISO 9001 — quality management systems certification. Confirms the factory has consistent production processes, not just good samples.
What to ask your supplier: Request the actual certificate document, not a logo on a brochure. Check the certificate is current and covers the specific product category you're buying (towels fall under OEKO-TEX product class II for adults, class I for baby products).
Step 4 — Specify the Right Sizes
Standard hotel towel sizes vary by market. Here are the most common specifications used in export programmes:
| Item | Standard Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bath Towel | 70 × 140 cm | Most common hotel size globally |
| Bath Sheet | 90 × 150 cm | Popular in US and luxury retail |
| Hand Towel | 50 × 90 cm | Always ordered with bath towels as a set |
| Face Towel / Flannel | 30 × 30 cm | Typically ordered 2× per room per night |
| Bath Mat | 50 × 80 cm | Usually heavier GSM than bath towel |
Custom sizes are standard practice for wholesale hotel towels from Pakistan — most manufacturers will cut to your spec at no extra charge on orders above minimum quantities.
Step 5 — Evaluate Your Supplier
A good sample means nothing if the factory can't replicate it at scale. Before placing a bulk order with any towel manufacturer in Pakistan or elsewhere, go through this checklist:
- Request 3 washed samples — not fresh off the loom. The post-wash hand feel is what your guests or customers will experience.
- Ask for the GSM measurement method — pre-wash (greige) or post-wash (finished). The difference is 4–7%. See our guide on Piece Weight vs. Punch Weight.
- Confirm MOQ and lead time in writing — standard lead time from a Pakistani manufacturer is 60–75 days from order confirmation.
- Verify certifications independently — check OEKO-TEX and BSCI certificates directly on the issuing body's database.
- Ask about repeat-order consistency — request shade cards and production tolerances for colour matching on repeat programmes.
- Check packaging options — for retail, ask about polybag type (recycled LDPE?), carton markings and gift packaging options.
Why Source Hotel Towels from Pakistan?
Pakistan is one of the world's largest towel exporter nations — and for good reason. The country has a fully integrated cotton supply chain, competitive labour costs, and a manufacturing base that has been supplying European, US and Australian hotel chains for decades.
Pakistan also benefits from GSP+ duty-free access to the EU, which means a European importer pays zero customs duty on towels shipped from Pakistan — a meaningful cost advantage over comparable products from China or India.
For private label towels, custom logo hotel towels and OEKO-TEX certified wholesale towels, a Pakistani manufacturer will typically offer better value per GSM than most other sourcing origins at equivalent quality tiers.
